Bill Newcomb, the Architect of the Winning Layout of The Medalist

Our course architect, Bill Newcomb, has a very unique background when compared to other designers since his connection with the game runs from competitive player to course architect to site engineer to NCAA Division I golf coach to golf course owner and partner.

In his 20s, Newcomb was a nationally-ranked amateur player, having won the Michigan Amateur title and the Indiana Open. He has even played in the Masters.

Then in 1965, renowned designer Peter Dye offered Newcomb, who holds a master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of Michigan, an apprenticeship with his golf design firm. For three years Newcomb worked with one of the nation's greatest golf architects before establishing his own firm in 1968.

Newcomb added a construction firm in 1970 called Golf Course Specialists and over the years became the founder, partner and shareholder in several golf courses across the country from Anchorage (Alaska) Golf Co. to Calderone Farms in Grass Lake, Mich.

In addition to The Medalist, a partial list of Newcomb's numerous projects includes: the Mountain Ridge Course at the Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville, Michigan, The Orchards at Egg Harbor in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, Anchorage Golf Course in Anchorage, Alaska and Shoreline Golf Club in San Francisco, California.
